In some instances, additional pieces of jade have been found
beneath the head covering, including shaped plaques
to cover the eyes, and plugs to fit the ears and nose.
A Jade Burial Suit (Chinese: 玉衣; pinyin: yù yī; literally: "jade suit") is ceremonial suit made of pieces of jade which royal members and aristocrat of Han Dynasty were buried.
Considered top class burial suits in ancients time, jade was believed to be essence of mountains, carrying the power to keep body from decaying.
Origin of these suits dates as far back as Eastern Zhou Dynasty.
Raw materials had to be transported from far away
and then processed into thousands of pieces of various sizes.
The jade suit was delicately designed with orderly aligned
and harmoniously colored jade slices that reflect the superb
techniques of the craftsmen and the extravagant lives of the nobles.
As a symbol of class, jade suits, which were tailored
to the client's shape, were used as garments for deceased
emperors and nobility of the Han Dynasty.
Every piece had to be polished and small holes were drilled
into it , techniques that required high craftsmanship.
The size and shape of each piece was strictly designed
as part of the artwork and special golden thread
was also needed to sew the jade pieces together.
Once the suits were finished, depending on the type of thread
used in them, the suit would be called, “gold thread sewn jade burial suit,”,
“silver thread sewn jade burial suit” or “copper thread sewn jade burial suit”.
Composition of wire varies, and several suits have
been found joined with either gold or silver.
In the official Chinese historical text known as
the History of the Later Han, it was described that the
thread used was dependent on the status of the person buried.
A Jade burial suit was extremely expensive to create, and only wealthy aristocrats could afford to be buried in them.
